Hey Reader,
Have you heard of the concept of "build in public"?
Here's what it means:
Build in Public: "When a startup builds a product or service in public, they allow people to see their building process from the start" (source).
A lot of really cool companies do this, and a lot of really smart people recommend it.
BUT... being honest, it scares me.
Because in my head it feels like "Hey, everyone! Watch me! I'm new at this, and I could fail!
But it also brings our followers along for the journey.
It's shared learning.
It's community building.
It's vulnerable.
And hey, it's entertaining- we can't help but watch a train wreck, and we also love stories with happy endings.
So, either way, our audience is guaranteed to get one of those when we build in public (hopefully the latter).
So here's my deal: I'll start building in public more, and sharing what's working on my journey (and what's not) with you.
And if you're trying to build something or even achieve a big goal, I encourage you to do the same.
You'll be surprised at how many people will come out of nowhere to support you when they know what you're up to.
In today's email:
You get all kinds of success advice on the internet from people who don’t know what they’re talking about.
Don’t trust them.
In fact, don’t trust me either.
Instead, trust positive psychologists who study successful people. They examine why people succeed and have learned a lot about their habits and the inner workings of their minds.
(I'm testing out writing on Medium- if you read this article, can you do me a favor and follow me there? I'd love to get to 100 followers and I'm currently at 6 😅)
Question: I'm a busy mom of two and a caregiver to my father who is living with us. Where can I find the time to work on a side hustle or passive income project?
Answer: This is a great question that I get asked a lot. I'd recommend you do a time audit and start tracking exactly where your time is going every day. To do this, grab a pen and some paper and set an alarm on your phone for every 15-30 minutes. When the alarm goes off, quickly jot down what you were doing since the alarm went off last time. At the end of the day review the data, and look for activities that can be eliminated, delegated, or reduced. Those are the spots where you can work on your side hustle or passive income project.
I have a free time tracker that goes more in depth with this process that you can get here.

Hey, it's Rachel— I've always been fascinated with people's dreams of winning the lottery and becoming rich. Did you know: The odds of winning the lottery are one in 300 million. 50% of Americans buy lottery tickets each year. 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. The average American has a 3% chance of becoming a millionaire. What is equally fascinating to me is that so many people leave such a big dream up to chance. Why not just make it happen? While building wealth can be complex,...
Hey, it's Rachel— Do you have a love hate relationship with your phone? You know, sometimes you think it's the best thing ever and it makes your life easier? But sometimes it gets in the way, makes you feel overwhelmed and overstimulated? If this sounds like you, you're not alone. Did you know Gartner (a major research and consulting firm) predicts that by 2025, 50% of people will have either abandoned social media or decreased their usage substantially? And searches for "dumb phones" and app...
Hey, it's Rachel— I was reading You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb this week, and a specific quote cracked me up and reminded me of an important lesson we all should remember: "If the queen had balls, she'd be the king." This saying is essentially a blunt way of saying that thinking about what could be if things were different is futile. From a psychological perspective, this phrase highlights our human tendency to imagine alternate realities or what might have been if things were...
